How does InterStim work?

The InterStim program is structured with two conservative treatments and two advanced treatments. The conservative treatments include supervised dietary modification, professional physical therapy, bowel retraining (biofeedback), and clinical medications. The conservative treatments sound simple but with professional supervision these simple remedies can work miracles.

But what if conservative treatments don't work? This is where the advanced treatments come into play. The advanced treatments include minimally invasive treatments as well as surgical options. These surgical options aim to physically repair the anal sphincter muscles, or to open the large intestine out through the abdominal wall. Potential procedures include postanal repair, sphincteroplasty, and a colostomy.

Utilizing state of the art technology, the Medtronic Bowel Control Therapy device (Medtronic) designed by InterStim systems restores bowel function by restoring the pathway connection between the brain and bowel through gentle nerve stimulation therapy. The Medtronic is clinically proven to stop or greatly reduce bowel accidents and to inherently, significantly improve the quality of life. This treatment has been proven and tested to be minimally invasive and most importantly safe. Being used and improved since 2011, the recharge-free and rechargeable device options allow your doctor to personalize your treatment so it is exactly that; YOUR treatment.

So what is it exactly? The Medtronic Bowel Control therapy begins with a simple test. Powered by a small battery and wire, the lead connects to a small external device discretely worn under your clothes. That's it. For a two week period you will wear the device daily and record your symptoms. After this trial period your doctor will discuss potential treatments moving forward based off of the InterStim System data.
